Friday’s racing tips: Best bets for Haydock, Goodwood & Worcester

Friday’s horse racing tips

  • Rosy Affair (Haydock, 14.55) - 2pt win @ 7/4 ( BOYLE Sports )
  • St Mawes (Goodwood, 15.07) – 1pt win @ 3/1 ( bet365 )
  • Orionis (Goodwood, 15.42) – 2pts win @ 5/1 ( bet365 )
  • Melton Mossy (Worcester, 17.32) – 1pt win @ 5/1 ( bet365 )
  • Premier Tenor (Worcester, 18.41) – 1pt win @ 6/4 ( bet365 )

Thank heaven it’s Friday as we kick off the bank holiday weekend with a busy day of racing, featuring day 1 of the May Festival at Goodwood and a competitive card at Haydock.

All Rosy for Haydock favourite

If it wasn’t for the fact that she is drawn in stall 15 and the last eight winners of this have come out of single figure stalls, I’d be very confident about ROSY AFFAIR winning this.

The form of her latest effort, when she pushed my selection Flora Of Bermuda right to the line to finish a head second in a similar race at Newmarket (6f, good to firm) showed that George Boughey’s five-year-old mare is still improving.

Note that a tongue-tie has been fitted on her chief market rival Sky Majesty, which could see an upturn in fortunes and William Haggas’ runner looks the chief threat to the selection, though she too has a double figure draw to overcome.

Half Sovereign hasn’t really run any sort of race twice in succession now, her trainer Karl Burke blaming the trip on the heavy ground at Longchamp last time. If she gets her act together, she’d be a threat, but I think the favourite on betting sites still looks the one to be with.

Friday tip 1: Rosy Affair - 2pt win @ 7/4 (BOYLE Sports)

More to come from St Mawes

A small field assembles for this stamina test but there looks to be a worthwhile bet for us. Give It To Me Oj heads the list of runners on horse racing betting sites and returns to this code seeking a hat-trick after back-to-back wins at Epsom over the Derby C&D last September. He did go on to complete a cross-code hat-trick when scoring over hurdles at Cheltenham but faced some pretty stiff tasks thereafter.

Gary and Josh Moore’s charge will be a player back on the level and over a trip at which he is unexposed. However, preference is for ST MAWES, who receives 12lb from the aforementioned opponent but also arrives in good nick.

He’s already proven over C&D with a close third in a similar event earlier in the month. That was a career-best effort, and there could be more to come. He still looks well-treated after going up just 1lb, so we’ll side with him.

Friday racing tip 2: St Mawes (Goodwood, 15.07) – 1pt win @ 3/1 (bet365)

Haggas runner can continue fine form at Goodwood

William Haggas is such a fine exponent of the art of training racehorses and ORIONIS is just one of many cases in point.

She didn’t show a huge amount of promise on her debut 18 months or so ago but, with that experience under her belt, she was put away until last spring and showed immediate improvement on her return to the track at Wetherby.

Since then, Haggas has placed her well, winning three of her subsequent seven starts, all at 1m3f-1m4f and her story throughout last season was one that saw her keep raising the bar right through until her Class 2 third at Newmarket when last seen in October.

With another winter under her belt, her knowledge of the game and the trainer’s string being in good form, she looks worth siding with, especially as there are never usually any fitness concerns with this stable.

Friday racing tip 3: Orionis – 2pts win @ 5/1 (bet365)

Melton a tasty prospect at Worcester

This looks competitive. The new David Pipe inmate Karnaval Point is an interesting runner who is potentially well treated and definitely merits a check to see if there’s a market move for him on betting apps. Jet Stream is not ruled out but I like the look of MELTON MOSSY.

The winner of several hurdles at up to 2m5f, he acts on a sound surface and won a three-runner event at Wincanton (1m7f, good) when last seen in March. That was just his second chase start. He goes well when fresh, is up 3lb and is unexposed over fences.

The dual French chase winner Karnaval Point has changed hands since last month's Auteuil success and appears to have a workable mark on his first start for this trainer. He’s worth noting in the market but the selection has conditions to suit and should be suited going back up in trip.

Friday racing tip 4: Melton Mossy – 1pt win @ 5/1 (bet365)

Premier Tenor may be music to the ears of bettors

Not normally the type of race I’d get involved in but PREMIER TENOR looks a very interesting piece of recruitment by the champion trainer Dan Skelton and I am going to side with him to making a winning start on these shores.

He is out of a French 2m1f hurdle winner who is a half-sister to two French jumping winners, both over hurdles and one of them also over fences. In addition to that pedigree, this four-year-old also won a conditions event on the Flat (1m5½f, good to soft) last October, so he’s already shown the ability to win.

He’s sporting both a hood and a tongue-tie on his British debut and it would be no surprise if he has a good future ahead of him.

Friday racing tip 5: Premier Tenor – 1pt win @ 6/4 (bet365)

Gamble responsibly

If you’re having a bet on Friday’s racing, it’s vital to practice responsible gambling.

Betting can be addictive, and it’s important to stay in control of your gambling, whether you’re using online bookmakers, casino sites, slot sites, bingo sites or any other gambling platform.

Never treat gambling as a way to make money, never bet more than you can afford and when the fun stops, stop.

Gambling sites offer punters tools, like deposit limits, profit and loss trackers and self-exclusion options, to help you stay in control.

But if you ever feel like you need help or advice on gambling addiction, don’t hesitate to contact one of the charities or organisations below.
