Father smashes son’s laptop after CBSE Class 12 result, social media debates fear-based parenting

A viral Reddit post showing a shattered laptop on the floor has triggered widespread discussion on toxic parenting and academic pressure in India after a student claimed to have faced abuse following poor CBSE Class 12 examination results.

The student alleged that their father smashed the laptop, took away their room and bed, and forced them to sleep on the floor after the results were declared. The post drew strong reactions online, with several users expressing support and discussing the impact of fear-based parenting on students.

“Ik I am late here, but this is what my father did after 12th results were out,” the Reddit user wrote while sharing an image of the damaged laptop.

The student further claimed, “And if that wasn't enough, he took away my room and bed from me, and makes me sleep on the floor now. I am facing verbal, physical, mental and emotional abuse since the results are out. (I got 57.4%, Essential Repeat).”

Social media users criticise fear-based parenting

The post quickly gained traction, with many users criticising harsh parenting methods linked to academic performance.

One user wrote that many students feel mentally exhausted after board examination results because of pressure at home. The user argued that fear-based parenting often creates anxiety, shame, low confidence, and encourages students to hide problems instead of addressing them.

The comment further stated that marks alone no longer determine career success and that students with average academic scores can still build careers through skills, communication, internships, online work, networking, and portfolio-based opportunities.

“Most students already know they underperformed. What they need next is direction, not destruction,” the user wrote, while questioning whether strict parenting methods remain effective in 2026.

Users share personal experiences

Several other users shared their own experiences and opinions in response to the post.

One commenter said they had failed in mathematics but received support from their father, adding that “life is unfair in many ways”.

Another user questioned the value of seeking validation from people who “only accept you when we succeed but will abuse you” during failure.

A separate comment expressed sympathy for the student, with the user stating they had used the same low-end laptop for seven years and would be deeply affected if it were destroyed.

Another commenter said that while restricting access to a laptop may have been understandable in cases of addiction, destroying it was “a stupid thing”.

Debate on academic pressure

The viral discussion has renewed conversations around academic pressure, mental health, and parenting styles in India, particularly during board examination result season.

Many users urged younger generations to “break the generational curse” of responding to academic setbacks with humiliation, punishment, or abuse, arguing instead for guidance and emotional support for students facing setbacks.
