Euphoria Fans Are Inconsolable After Yet Another Major Death In The Wild Series Finale

euphoria-series-finale

Euphoria just aired its series finale, and fans reckon it was a fittingly wild ending to an already controversial and shocking final season of the HBO teen drama.

The last-ever episode dropped earlier today, bringing an end to the various storylines that found the core characters swept up in sex work, loan shark debts, organised crime syndicates, and a jaw-dropping wedding.

Fans were already reeling from the death of Nate Jacobs (played by Jacob Elordi) in the seventh episode of season three, with episode eight, titled “In God We Trust”, having to recover from that major bombshell while also revealing the fate of Rue (Zendaya), Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and Jules (Hunter Schafer), who were each on their own journeys of evading law enforcement, achieving viral stardom, and becoming a sugar baby.

With all those extremely high stakes, fans already anticipated at least one other death awaited them in the last-ever episode — but did that come to fruition? And how did Euphoria wrap up the biggest arcs from the season? Read on for fans’ (spoiler-filled) reactions to the buzziest moments from the Euphoria series finale.

Fans rally behind Maddy and Cassie

The eight episode picks up soon after Nate’s death, finding Cassie and Maddy (played by Alexa Demie) as they grieve their husband and ex-boyfriend, respectively.

The heartwarming scene at the diner implied that perhaps these frenemies are actually on good terms after a season of questionable motives, and fans enjoyed this more heartwarming side to their oft-tumultuous relationship. “I feel bad for Maddy and Cassie,” one fan wrote on X, while another added that “without Nate, there’s no bad blood left between them”.

Laurie evades capture

Things catch up with Laurie (Martha Kelly), one of the show’s most sinister villains, in the series finale, culminating in the Drug Enforcement Agency — who has been using Rue as an insider — finally catching her. She delivers the finale’s first major moment after jumping from a roof to her death to avoid being arrested.

“Laurie straight up ending it all,” one X user wrote. The moment brings some closure to Rue’s storyline with one of her biggest adversaries now out of the way, but Martha wasn’t the only person from Rue’s past to reappear in the finale.

Fans “heartbroken” by Fez’s reappearance

One of the tenderest moments of the Euphoria finale happened when Rue visited the store that Fez used to work at. Angus Cloud, who played Fez, tragically passed away in 2023, so the return of his character — via an old photo of Rue and Fez — was enough to send fans into an emotional spiral. “Seeing Fez for the finale warmed my heart!” one X user wrote.

Rue dies and fans are inconsolable

If they were already reeling over Fez, fans were left in a downright tizzy over perhaps the biggest bombshell of the entire series: when Rue dies of an overdose after Alamo (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) gives her drugs laced with fentanyl. Naturally, the death of the show’s main character was divisive on social media.

“Rue overdosing and dying halfway through the finale omg??” one fan wrote. “So if Rue is dead, Nate’s dead and Cassie and Maddy are no longer beefing, who tf is gonna be driving the bus the rest of this finale?” another asked.

“Ain’t no way they killed Rue off 44 minutes into the finale,” a third fan wrote. “Rue was supposed to get better, have her happy ending, realise life would turn around for her in the end,” another added. The major death was predicted by some fans ahead of the finale, but optimists still held onto hope that the embattled Rue would some how be able to turn things around by the series’ end.

That turned out not to be case, and it caused a stir among fans. “I think think we all figured Rue would die but in the middle of the finale episode just feels wrong,” one critic of the moment said. “I fear they were baiting us with a huge explosive finale but I feel like Rue being dead with an hour left means the rest with all be related to reactions to her death,” another wrote.

That jaw-dropping revelation was understandably the finale’s biggest moment. The death of Rue, though tragic, feels like a fitting end to the entire series. Both Zendaya and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson have confirmed there are no plans for Euphoria season four, which is just as well — since a Rue-less version of the series wouldn’t feel quite right.

It marks the end of a series that couldn’t help but generate chatter and launched the careers of actors who are now Hollywood staples. We’ll be sure to see them in many projects to come, but in the meantime, I’m going to spend a few moments mourning our beloved Rue.
