The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) Office has entered into a partnership with VietJet Group, signing a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on the development of a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) centre at U-tapao airport.
The agreement marks a major step in Thailand's ambitious plan to transform the EEC into a hub for aviation and advanced industries, said the office.
Chula Sukmanop, secretary-general of the EEC Office, said the agreement includes a feasibility study to establish the MRO facility, which is part of the government's flagship project in Rayong province.
Rayong, Chon Buri and Chachoengsao form the core of the EEC, where U-tapao airport is to serve as a centrepiece for economic development.
The corridor is set to host 12 targeted S-curve industries, including next-generation automobiles and smart electronics, underscoring the government's plan to turn the EEC into a high-tech industrial hub.
"The MRO project aims to support VietJet in maintaining and repairing its aircraft, while also strengthening the aviation industry in Southeast Asia, particularly for flights between Thailand and Vietnam," Mr Chula said.
The agreement comes as Thailand and Vietnam recently elevated their bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership. The two nations, celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations, signed four cooperation agreements covering the economy, technology, education and aviation.
The EEC Office believes this collaboration will enhance regional stability, foster sustainable economic growth and integrate supply chains across the region.
Mr Chula said U-tapao airport will play a crucial role in driving Thailand's economic expansion.
The EEC Office projects a fresh wave of investment this year, spurred by renewed progress in the long-delayed U-tapao airport and Eastern Aerotropolis development project.
A 290‑billion‑baht construction project at the airport began in early April, after years of setbacks caused by delays to a high-speed rail system linking three airports, which was compounded by the pandemic.
U-tapao airport and the Eastern Aerotropolis are considered cornerstone projects in Thailand's infrastructure strategy.
