Donald Trump Agrees To Two-Week Ceasefire If Iran Reopens Hormuz Strait

Donald Trump

Donald Trump has announced he is suspending plans to bomb Iran for another two weeks, heralding a “double-sided ceasefire”.

Taking to his social media platform Truth Social, the American president revealed he had received a 10-point proposal from Iran and plans to negotiate.

“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump said.

“This will be a double-sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East. We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate.”

Trump previously threatened in a Tuesday morning post that “a whole civilisation will die tonight, never to be brought back again” if Iran did not reach a deal with the U.S. He had previously said opening the Strait of Hormuz is a “very big priority” in the negotiations.

Trump also warned that the U.S. could target Iran’s civilian infrastructure — including bridges, power plants and desalination facilities — if Tehran failed to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The threat has intensified concerns among legal experts, who caution that such actions could breach international law.

As reported by Politico, the Pentagon had been expanding its list of potential targets in Iran to include energy facilities serving both civilian and military purposes. The move could provide the administration with a legal rationale to counter accusations of war crimes.

Meanwhile, Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz — a key global shipping route responsible for transporting roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply — has sent fuel prices surging across Europe and the United States. Trump has also publicly criticised members of the NATO, accusing allies of failing to contribute sufficiently to efforts aimed at reopening the passage.

Last week, he said that the war would not cease until the strait was reopened to traffic, adding that the U.S. would be “blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!!” until then.

Despite his ongoing threats, Trump said on Monday that Iranian officials were “negotiating, I think, in good faith” with the U.S.

Trump also said he did not worry that his threats to bomb Iranian civilian infrastructure could amount to war crimes, adding, “I hope I don’t have to do it.”
