Doctor's surgery locked down and properties evacuated as car crashes into building

A doctor surgery and pharmacy were forced to closed today after a car crashed into a building.

The vehicle collided with the Douglas Street Surgery in Hamilton just after 9am.

The surgery and Boots Pharmacy, which sits next door, were closed as a result.

A Boots spokesperson said: "We can confirm that our Douglas Street store in Douglas is currently closed following an incident this morning. We are assisting the emergency services and will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so."

Emergency services were called to the incident and one person was treated at the scene by ambulance crews.

The Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call today at 9.04am to attend an incident in Hamilton. We dispatched one ambulance and treated and discharged one patient at the scene.”

Douglas Street between Clydesdale Street and Almada Street was locked down by police for over an hour, and the public were asked to avoid the area.

The road has since re-opened.

Police Scotland Lanarkshire has released a statement: "Douglas Street in Hamilton is closed between Clydesdale Street and Almada Street following a report of a car crashing into a building, around 9.10am today.

"A number of nearby properties have been evacuated as a precaution and members of the public are being asked to avoid the area."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: “We were alerted at 9.07am on Thursday, May 21, to reports of a collision involving a vehicle and a building near to Douglas Street in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire.

“Operations control mobilised two fire appliances to assist emergency service partners at the scene.

“One casualty was passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“Crews left the scene at 10.04am after ensuring the area was made safe.”
