Police have confirmed that accused cop killer Dezi Freeman has died after being shot by officers in Victoria’s north-east early Monday morning.
Authorities said officers were called to a rural property near Walwa, where Freeman was located after six months on the run. He was reportedly shot just before 8:30am and died at the scene. No officers were injured.
“The State Coroner will attend the scene and the investigation will be oversighted by Professional Standards Command, as per standard process for a police shooting,” police said in a statement.

Freeman had been wanted since August 2025, when two officers, Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart-Hottart, were killed during a police operation at a property in Porepunkah. A third officer was seriously injured in the incident.
Police had attended the Rayner Track address at the time to execute a search warrant linked to the Wangaratta Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team when Freeman opened fire.
A third officer was seriously injured in the exchange before Freeman fled into bushland, sparking a massive state-wide manhunt that stretched into the Mount Buffalo National Park.
According to 9News, Freeman was reportedly found hiding inside a shipping container at the Walwa property when heavily armed officers moved in today. He was shot during the operation.
Investigations into today’s shooting will continue on.
