Celtic-linked manager 'resigns' from club amid summer speculation

Potential Celtic managerial candidate Robbie Keane has "resigned" from Ferencvaros, according to reports in Hungary.

The former striker is among the leading candidates to take over permanently at Parkhead and now appears to be on the move following claims from outlets M4Sport and Nemzeti Sport that he has stepped down from his role.

Keane, who took charge of the Hungarian side in January 2025, delivered the league title in his first season before finishing second in the most recent campaign.

While Celtic are said to be weighing up their options, the Irishman has also been linked with Slovak champions Slovan Bratislava in recent days.

Meanwhile, another potential candidate is off the table after Jens Berthel Askou left Motherwell this week to join French side Toulouse.

Interim boss Martin O’Neill remains in contention for the role and has indicated he expects talks with major shareholder Dermot Desmond in the near future. He said: “Yeah, I would expect Dermot to talk to me.

“I wouldn’t expect him to say, ‘Look, there’s a five-year deal’. If he does, that takes me up to 93! It’s whether I’d be up for the challenge again, really.

“Our club have to look at the challenges ahead. Hearts are coming and Rangers will get stronger. But you don’t get much time when the season starts. That takes a bit of doing, and it’s whether you’d have the energy to do it.

“Could I do it? I genuinely don’t know.”
