Clint Dempsey offered a brutal assessment of Canada manager Jesse Marsch following the nation’s opening fixture this evening against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Canada were held to a 1-1 draw in Group B’s opening World Cup fixture, with goals arriving through Jovo Lukic in the 21st minute, and Cyle Larin in the 78th.
As the Canadian national team search for an elusive World Cup win continues — with six losses and now one draw in the tournament’s history — former United States forward Dempsey slammed Marsch for questioning the patriotism of the USMNT.

Marsch represented the USA both on and off the pitch, with his managerial stint coming as assistant to Bob Bradley between the years of 2010 and 2011.
Dempsey, the United States’ leading goal-scorer with 57 strikes in 141 appearances, fumed at the now Canada boss’ claims that he had to “beg” the USMNT to sing their country’s anthem, comparing them to his current Canadian crop who belt it proudly.
Marsch, who made this provocative comment during the build-up to his side’s Bosnia clash, was on the receiving end of harsh words from Dempsey, who told him to “stay in his own lane.”
Speaking on Fox Sports, the ex-USMNT hero said: “He really said that? I can’t take this guy too seriously. When the national anthem played — I wasn’t someone who normally would sing — I would put my hand over my heart and pray to the good man upstairs.
“I’m someone who has bled for this country. I broke my nose playing for this country, I’ve come back from two heart procedures and played for this country.
“I’m not going to take advice from someone who switched to the other side and [is] singing another country’s national anthem,” said the 43-year-old.
Dempsey then invoked Thierry Henry’s recurrent use of the phrase “stay in your own lane” to finish his indictment of Marsch.

“Stay in your own lane — it looks like he’s in a dang moped,” said the ex-UMSNT icon. “Worry about your own team.”
Marsch's men secured a historic draw in their opening World Cup fixture against Bosnia — the first point achieved by the nation in the tournament's history.
The USMNT will face off against Paraguay in Group D’s opening fixture this evening, looking to not only deliver a better footballing performance than Canada did, but also a better rendition of their national anthem.
