A California dumpster rental company’s unusual response to an unpaid bill has gone viral after a video showed a driver dumping a customer’s trash back onto the property, only for police to step in and partially stop the retaliation.
The incident involved Express Rental Dumpster in San Pablo, California, where the company says a customer failed to pay for a rented dumpster used during a move-out cleanup at a residence on 19th Street. According to the business owner, Martin Perez, the renter repeatedly promised payment after a credit card was declined but never followed through.
Perez said the company had already absorbed the costs of delivering and retrieving the dumpster. Taking the full container to the landfill would have added hundreds more in dumping fees, he said, prompting the driver to return the contents to the customer’s driveway rather than haul them away at the company’s expense.
The customer’s identity has not been publicly released, and it remains unclear whether the disputed rental bill has since been paid.

Ring camera footage captured the moment the dumpster truck backed into the driveway and unloaded a large pile of debris onto the property, creating a scene that quickly spread online and sparked debate over whether the move was justified or excessive.
A neighbor identified only as Mary, who witnessed the incident, told California’s KTVU she was stunned to see the trash dumped after being told the renter had paid approximately $700 for the service. She said she initially did not understand the dispute until she later learned of the alleged payment issue.
The aftermath created additional headaches for the neighborhood. After the trash pile was left in the driveway, scavengers reportedly rummaged through the debris and spread items further around the property. A nearby resident later helped cover and tidy some of the mess.
Police were called to the scene after neighbors reported the mess, particularly because some of the debris extended onto the sidewalk and near the street. Officers required the driver to move the trash fully onto the customer’s property, preventing it from obstructing public walkways or road access.

Local officials are reportedly investigating whether the tenant or property occupant could face consequences for the debris remaining on the property, though no public enforcement action or criminal charges had been announced as of this week.
The incident has generated widespread attention online, with many commenters siding with the dumpster company and arguing that the business merely returned property it had not been paid to dispose of. Others questioned whether the company’s actions could expose it to liability despite the payment dispute.
Perez has defended the decision, saying the company could not afford to absorb both the unpaid rental and the landfill fees after multiple unsuccessful attempts to collect payment.
Under San Pablo’s municipal code, the property owner or tenant is ultimately responsible for keeping the sidewalk and property clear. Since Code Enforcement has opened a case, the tenant may face fines ranging from $250 to $3,000 for the nuisance, likely costing them far more than the original dumpster fee
