At least one dead as 7.4-magnitude earthquake strikes Indonesia

  • A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's Molucca Sea early on Thursday, initially prompting a tsunami warning for Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.
  • Small tsunami waves, measuring up to 30cm, were recorded at several monitoring stations in Indonesia and 5cm in the southern Philippines.
  • The tsunami warning was subsequently lifted after authorities confirmed there was no widespread threat to more distant areas.
  • The tremor caused at least one fatality, a 70-year-old woman in North Sulawesi, and resulted in light to moderate damage to houses and buildings in areas such as Ternate and Bitung.
  • Residents experienced strong shaking, leading to panic and evacuations, with officials warning of potential aftershocks due to Indonesia's location on major seismic faults.
