Arsenal trophy parade chaos: Six stabbings and 24 arrests as 500 police officers deployed

Police made 24 arrests during Arsenal’s Premier League title celebration and six people were stabbed as 500 police officers were deployed to manage the crowds.

Hundreds of thousands of Arsenal supporters lined the streets around the Emirates Stadium as the team embarked on their trophy parade on Sunday afternoon.

Although most fans attended peacefully, the event was marred by serious violence, including gang-related offences.

The Metropolitan Police said 10 people were arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and three were arrested on suspicion of sexual assault at the parade.

One officer was left with a slash on the hand and another was hit on the head, both caused by thrown objects.

Among the 10 was an individual arrested for a recall to prison and on suspicion of a public order offence after allegedly racially abusing police officers.

Another person at the parade was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, and another on suspicion of possession of a lock knife and class C drugs.

Two others were also arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class C drugs.

Others were arrested for alleged offences including being drunk and disorderly, a public order offence relating to homophobic comments towards an officer, obstructing police, affray and the breach of a Section 35 dispersal order.

All those arrested were taken into custody.

Officers dealt with six stabbings along the parade route, including a man stabbed on Hornsey Road just after 8.30pm, also attended by paramedics and the air ambulance.

The man was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition but is now stable.

Other victims stabbed in the area were not reported to be seriously injured.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said they rescued had “approximately 75 people” from incidents “at height” during the event.

The London Fire Brigade also said they attended a fire at a hotel, believed to have been caused by a stray flare.

Assistant Commissioner of LFB, Pat Goulbourne, said: “Fortunately, the fire caused only a small amount of damage to the exterior of the building.

“Pyrotechnics are also believed to have triggered the fire alarms at several other locations in the area.

“As supporters head home, we would urge them to avoid using pyrotechnics, particularly at stations, and to keep them away from buildings and other flammable materials.”

The roads were littered with cans, bottles, collapsed e-bikes and debris from the celebration.

A Section 60 order was in place last night to prevent further crimes and to give police additional stop and search powers in the area.

Commander Stuart Bell, who led the Met’s public order operation this weekend, said: “I would like to thank the vast majority of the hundreds of thousands of Arsenal supporters who attended the day to celebrate safely and responsibly.

“There was a police presence along the route throughout the event, supporting event organisers and stewarding operations.

“However, we had been clear that violence and other criminality would not be tolerated and unfortunately there were pockets of anti-social behaviour and incidents where officers needed to intervene, including assaults on their colleagues.

“As the evening progressed and the majority of the crowds made their way home, there was sadly further violence, including gang-related incidents.

“Officers were swiftly on scene to each stabbing and investigations are ongoing.”

Chief Superintendent Jason Stewart, who leads policing in Islington, added: “This of course was a huge and significant event for our community and Arsenal fans more widely and we worked closely with the local authority and other partners to plan for the event and then throughout the day.

“Our officers are back out on patrol today to provide visible reassurance and our investigation teams are working hard to identify offenders and bring them to justice. We stand with our local communities against violence.”
