AI is making blue collar workers like electricians, mechanics richer than office workers

For years, the conversation around artificial intelligence has focused on the jobs it could replace. But a new trend emerging in India's labour market suggests AI is also creating lucrative opportunities for a different class of workers — electricians, HVAC technicians and robotics specialists.

According to an analysis by talent firm Randstad of more than 50 million job postings, demand for electricians in India has jumped by 242% over the past four years. As reported by the Times of India, hiring for HVAC technicians has surged by 200%, while demand for robotics technicians has skyrocketed by more than 500%.

The trend highlights a growing reality of the AI era: every breakthrough in artificial intelligence requires a vast physical infrastructure powered by skilled human workers. Data centres need electricity, cooling systems must operate around the clock, and factories increasingly rely on automation equipment that requires installation and maintenance.

Randstad India Managing Director and CEO Viswanath P S described the shift as a "labour flip", where skilled technical trades are beginning to outperform many traditional entry-level office jobs.
