Good afternoon.
The treasurer, Jim Chalmers, is blaming an “unhinged scare campaign” for fuelling some of the backlash to the government’s proposed crackdown on negative gearing, capital gains tax and trusts.
Chalmers has conceded Labor has taken a “political hit” after the latest Newspoll found a negative response to last Tuesday’s budget.
Speaking to reporters in Queensland on Monday, Chalmers said the government was prepared to wear the short-term political cost in order to attempt to fix the “broken” status quo on housing and tax.
