An island has long been considered a luxury in a kitchen, and as the centerpiece of your whole design, how it looks is just as important as how it functions.
And as it's the first thing you see when you enter the room, it's no surprise so many of us are looking for ways to make our kitchen island ideas look more elevated. But how can you infuse a sense of luxury without a full overhaul?

If you're searching for ways to make a kitchen look expensive, your island is a great place to start. From finishes and materials to decorative accessories, here's how designers create that high-end look every time.
1. Make the Island a Focal Point with Color
One of the simplest ways to make your kitchen island stand out and feel a little bit more luxurious is to finish it in a contrasting tone, stain, or paint color to the rest of your kitchen cabinetry.
'Contrast the island from the perimeter – you may not want a strong color on all of the cabinets, but consider a contrasting stain or paint on the island with more basic perimeter cabinets,' suggests Seth Ballard of Ballard & Mensua Architecture.
It could be a bold paint color to contrast neutral cabinets, a darker wood stain (a great option for freestanding islands or trolleys), or a completely different material to bring a more collected feel. It's a simple swap that makes a huge impact.

'Kitchen islands tend to be the focal point of the room, so a few thoughtful, yet low-effort upgrades can go a long way toward making a kitchen feel more high-end, like swapping builder-grade pendant lights for sculptural fixtures that act like jewelry above the island,' says Caroline Danielson of Ferguson Home.
'Kitchen islands simply by design elevate the space, but lighting fixtures can take them to another level,' agrees Ania Agardy, founder of Luxury Living by Ania Agardy. 'You can go over-sized or understated, depending on the look you want to achieve. A grouping of three pendants is most commonly used, but you can opt for a single, larger pendant if you want to make a statement.'
Creating a high-end feel goes beyond the number of lights you opt for – style and materials are just as, if not more, important. 'There is a lot of room to play with materials, from glass with brass to linen shades or even alabaster,' explains Ania.
'Designer tip: Be aware of scale and proportions. Hang pendants from 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. Also consider visual weight. For heavy pendants (metal or stone), go slightly smaller, while for lighter, more airy pendants such as glass or open frames, you can go slightly larger.'

3. Create a Flush Finish Between the Countertop and Side Panels
We often overthink the decorative details in a kitchen, but one of the most impactful ways designers always return to in order to create a high-end look is ensuring the build and construction of the island is well-refined.
'One detail I am very particular about is ensuring the stone countertop never appears visually suspended in space. When a marble or quartz slab simply overhangs the cabinetry without architectural support, the island can feel unfinished or builder-grade,' explains interior designer Kimberly Oxford.
'Instead, we often extend the island’s wood side paneling to align precisely with the outer edge of the countertop. This creates a grounded, furniture-like presence and subtly embraces the person seated at the island. It is a relatively low-cost millwork adjustment, yet it delivers a noticeably more tailored and elevated result,' she adds.
This trick should be considered during the kitchen design phase to be the most low-effort, but it's a simple adjustment that will create a more custom, considered finish. 'The approach is quite straightforward,' Kimberly assures.
'Rather than stopping the end panel flush with the cabinet box, we carry the finished panel forward so it meets the stone edge. This eliminates the visual gap beneath the overhang and introduces depth, proportion, and intentionality. The island begins to read as a designed object rather than a standard installation.'
4. Add a Butcher Block
The island is the centerpiece of a kitchen, and usually the first feature you see when you enter the room. So, materials matter, and choosing something practical yet still striking is key.
'Replacing the existing island countertops with butcher block for a warm look or honed natural stone for an elevated classic look is a favorite way to upgrade,' says Michelle Vassallo of MV Architects.
There's no reason you have to choose only one material, either. If you already have marble countertops, for example, 'add a butcher block wood top that brings warmth to the kitchen,' says Seth, to add contrast as well as a functional benefit.
You can achieve the same look with well-crafted wooden cutting boards, which act as decor when not in use, and then become a hardworking addition for food prep. It proves you don't have to spend a fortune or replace larger pieces of your kitchen to create a high-end look.
5. Elevate Your Kitchen Island Hardware
We always describe hardware as the jewellery of the kitchen, and the same applies to your island. It's a small detail, but changing out your existing handles to something more luxurious will inevitably elevate the whole design.
'Upgrading cabinet hardware can instantly make a kitchen island feel more luxurious. Both the appearance and the feel of a beautiful cast knob can subtly transform the experience of a kitchen,' says Aurora Farewell, founder of Aurora Farewell Architects.
Caroline agrees, adding: 'Upgraded cabinet hardware, such as longer pulls in warm metallic finishes, makes the island instantly feel more intentional and luxurious without requiring a full renovation.'
A classic drop handle always feels classic, and this design in antique brass ticks the box for timeless and high-end. The slightly aged look creates an antique feel, perfect for elevating your island.
Sometimes, it's the most unexpected hardware designs that can elevate an island. Instead of the usual metals, these drawer knobs feature a unique color variation, secured with iron hardware.
Texture also comes into play if you're using hardware to make your island look more high-end, and this knob design fits the bill. It has a gently textured surface and a slight indented profile. Matching handles are also available.
